Michael Donovan is a self-taught assignment photographer based in New York. He was born and raised in Spokane, WAand later moved to Portland, OR; Chicago, IL; Grand Rapids, MI; Bloomfield, NJ; and finally settled in NYC during the spring of 2009.

Michael worked as a standup comedian before becoming a visual artist and draws his experience working with audiences to create photographs that tell stories while matching positions and specific markets. Before comedy he was an Operations Manager where he was responsible for the development of several hundred to over a thousand employees. His unique experiences in business and entertainment communication gives him an advantage to tune in on both the needs of business and the fantasies we need as humans.

He believes images must be bold, able to generate emotions and specific to each project. He believes there is a time and place where provacative images should “punch viewers in the face and take their keys” or cool subdued photographs are better used to “send their spirit and mind on a vacation wrapped in a rainbow and warm cookies.” He embraces all styles of photography while installing his own personal aesthetic to reflect the ethics being discussed in each image.

Michael’s work has been seen in Vision (China), Chicago Tribune, Florida International and used by clients such as Chloe Wang, Lara Miller, Reed Smith, Beauty on Call and Hydrology among others.
